CHAPTER FIFTEEN

AFTER SHE RECOVERED from burying Daisy and the shock that her biological mother wasn’t the one who loved and cared for them, Patricia wondered when life would return to normal. Clemency wasn’t surprised and said she’d always suspected all wasn’t as it seemed where their parents were concerned. She hoped the sisters would become close after Jasmine discovered the truth and advised Patricia that it would be in her best interests to take time out to grieve Daisy’s passing and come to terms with the fact she was her real mother.

“Have you spoken to Jasmine and sent her a copy of your aunt’s letter?” she asked, busy making lunch in Patricia’s kitchen.

“Not yet. I’ll call her soon. Jasmine and Patrik have enough problems at the moment and my sister will be too upset to take on board Daisy’s revelations.” Patricia ached to spend time with her sister. She hoped Jasmine would book a flight and visit her, as soon as matters improved between her and Patrik. She’d recently moved back in with him and was adjusting to them spending more time as well as working at PartyPerfect. “But you must tell her Daisy’s explanation of what her father said or she’ll continue to believe she’s not worthy of being loved,” Clemency exclaimed.

“Knowing how upset she’ll be when she finds out our mother isn’t the one who gave birth to us, it seems kinder to discuss everything with her when I see her. She’ll accept it all eventually. Jasmine assured me she needs to focus on her marriage and that she wants to visit me in the foreseeable future.” Patricia had organised Daisy’s funeral and buried her next to her husband’s grave in Brighton, knowing Jasmine wouldn’t want to be present. Jasmine detested visiting their parents’ graves and preferred to mourn in private.

Serving the piping hot food, Clemency said, “Is it really as easy as that to fix a relationship? It takes time and patience, not forgetting effort, to trust someone who’s been unfaithful. Is Patrik convinced she means it?”

“I’ve no idea but I know he loves her, he told me as much when we saw each other and I’m fairly certain Jasmine loves him too much to risk losing him.” She paused to taste the dish that Jacques used to love. “This is divine, Clemency! You’ve done a great job. Goulash is my favourite recipe, and was passed on to me from Magg...Mum.”

“Good, I wanted to make us something special to eat, instead of the usual snacks and sandwiches between clients. Let me pour you another glass of wine.” They’d opened a new bottle of red wine while cooking and talking.

“Yes, please!”

As they sat quietly eating and drinking, the landline rang. Excusing herself, Patricia answered and her face lit up. “Great!” she said. “You must give me the details so I can pick you up at the airport.” She put down the receiver and smiled. “Jasmine’s coming over next week for a few days, I can’t begin to describe how pleased I am.
